    Происходит из Николо-Пешношского монастыря близ Дмитрова. Изначально икона входила в состав полнофигурного деисусного чина, остальные фрагменты которого пока не удалось найти. Когда икона была распилена пополам и сделалась поясным изображением - точно не известно (скорее всего в XVIII в.).

    Лазарев отмечал, что эта высочайшая по качеству икона по духу очень близка произведениям Рублева. Он также указывал на большое стилистичесткое сходство с той группой икон второй четверти XV века, которая связана с Троице-Сергиевым монастырем и для которой характерна особая тонкость ликов, выполненных с чисто миниатюрной тщательностью (например, Одигитрия с Троицей и фигурами и полуфигурами святых в ГТГ; Богоматерь Ярославская, там же (сравните...); Умиление из Троице-Сергиевой Лавры; Никола Можайский, там же).
