Luisa Piccarreta (1865-1947) and Maria Valtorta (1897-1961) are two Italian Catholic mystics whose spiritual and mystical works have wide dissemination in certain contemporary Catholic circles. Maria Valtorta is mainly known for her work The Gospel as Revealed to Me, while Luisa Piccarreta is recognized for her writings on the Divine Will, notably The Book of Heaven.

Question on the date of creation of Adam and Eve[edit | edit source]

A complex question arises when comparing the writings of these two mystics concerning the chronology of the creation of the first humans, Adam and Eve, and the moment of the Original Sin.

Position of Maria Valtorta[edit | edit source]

According to Maria Valtorta, human beings seem to have existed for tens of thousands of years. Taken literally, this suggests that the creation of Adam and Eve could date back at least twenty thousand years:

Jesus says [...] : "Here are tens of thousands of years that men accuse God of having led man to sin through the Temptation of the forbidden. And it will be so until the end of the ages for all that is not good.[1]"

Position of Luisa Piccarreta[edit | edit source]

On her side, Luisa Piccarreta mentions a different, shorter chronology, referring to a period of about six thousand years elapsed since Original Sin:

Luisa Piccarreta wrote:

"Here are six thousand years that in my holy humanity, I sigh and weep bitterly because I want, I demand, that my children be around me, in order to make them holy and happy. If you give me your will, all will be resolved. I will be happy, and you will be happy. I desire nothing else but that my Will be established in you.

Heaven and earth will smile upon you. Therefore, please listen to me, my dear children.[2]"

This dating is reinforced by other citations specifying that four thousand years separate Original Sin from the coming of Christ:

Luisa Piccarreta wrote:

"My daughter, for the advent of Redemption it took four thousand years, because the people who prayed and sighed for the coming of the promised Redeemer were the smallest, really very small in number. But the Souls who now belong to my Church form several peoples, and their number is much greater, oh! Yes, much greater than that of former times.

Therefore, number will shorten the time.[3]"
Luisa Piccarreta wrote: "My daughter, my love did not go out because of the fall of man, it flamed even more; and although my justice has rightly punished and condemned him, my love embracing my justice and without the intervention of time, promised the future Redeemer and said to the deceitful serpent with the empire of my power: 'You used a Woman to tear man away from my Divine Will and I, through another Woman having in her power the power of my Fiat, will destroy your Pride and she will crush your head with her immaculate foot.' These words burned the infernal serpent more than hell itself and put so much rage in his Heart that he could no longer be stopped; he has not stopped turning and overturning the earth to discover the one who was to crush his head, not to crush it, but so that, by his infernal arts, by his diabolical cunning, he might make fall the one who had to defeat him, weaken him, and bind him in the Darkness of the abyss. For four thousand years he roamed the earth and when he saw Women more virtuous and better, he fought with them, tested them in every way, then left them after having ensured, through some weakness or defect, that it was not through them he had to be defeated. Then he continued his tour.[4]"

Another particularly interesting citation to highlight these three major stages in the evolution of Humanity. According to the quote below, it is about 6000 years between the appearance of the first Men and today.

It seems to me that Jesus told me:

"My beloved daughter, I want to make you know the order of my Providence. Every two thousand years, I have renewed the world. At the end of the first two thousand years, I renewed it by the flood. At the end of the second two thousand years, I renewed it by my coming to earth where I manifested my Humanity. Through it, as through a lattice, my Divinity was let to be guessed. The good and the very holy of the two thousand years that followed this coming lived the Fruits of my Humanity and had a little bit of my Divinity. Currently, we are near the end of the third period of two thousand years. There will be a third renewal. That is the reason for the current general confusion which is nothing other than the preparation for the third renewal.[5]"

The "thousand years" in The Book of Heaven
There are 29 occurrences of the formulas "two thousand years", "four thousand years", or "six thousand years" in The Book of Heaven. This reasonably excludes the hypothesis of a mere accidental approximation: it is clearly a deliberate and structuring scheme.

Thus, to avoid any formal Contradiction between the two mystics, one would have to admit a very long period (at least 14,000 years) separating the creation of Adam and Eve from the moment when they actually committed Original Sin.

Theological remark[edit | edit source]

It is important to note that the Catholic Church does not dogmatically fix the precise date of the creation of Adam and Eve. Therefore, the chronological differences proposed by these mystical writings do not necessarily constitute major theological Contradictions. They could reflect distinct symbolic, spiritual, or pedagogical approaches.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

This chronological divergence deserves reflection but alone does not allow concluding an irreconcilable doctrinal incompatibility between the writings of Luisa Piccarreta and Maria Valtorta. A thorough study of the overall context of each work could offer additional elements to better understand these apparent differences.
