Mountain range in Syria, bounded by Mount Hermon to the north and Jordan to the south. Bosra was indeed the main city of the region.
During the Greco-Roman period, this term referred to a smaller district; it was then called the Auranitis. Around 23 BC, the Auranitis, the Gaulanitis, the Trachonitis, and the Batanea were granted to Herod the Great by Augustus. Upon the division of Herod’s kingdom, these territories formed the greater part of the tetrarchy of Philip. It is a plain whose only breaks are some volcanic hills. The soil is so fertile that the Hauran constitutes the granary of the whole country.
