Learn more about this place[edit | edit source]

It is during the second year of public life that Jesus undertakes the long journey through Auranitis, which leads him to Bozrah: "I will pass through Gerasa, Bozrah, Arbela up to Aëra"[3]. There, Jesus announces the prologue that Saint John reprises in his gospel: “the light shines in the Darkness, but the Darkness did not receive it.” [4]

Capital of Auranitis, the city is already mentioned in Egyptian archives, in 1350 BC under the name Busrana. It is also cited several times in the Bible[5]. Saint Dorotheus indicates that Simon Niger was its bishop. The exact location of the site, which preserves ruins dating back to the beginnings of Christianity, was determined in 1959[6] and confirmed in 1967[7] and 1970[8].
