Friend of Cleophas the leader of the synagogue. He is at his home when Jesus arrives. They discuss the case of Joseph of Emmaus, inadvertently incestuous.[1]

Man of a certain age.

Becomes a disciple like many inhabitants of this village and even follows Jesus on his travels in Judea.[2]

His name

Name probably derived from the Greek god Hermes. This god, Mercury in Latin, is reputed to be the spokesman of Zeus. Paul himself, following the healing of a paralytic at Lystra, is mistaken for Hermes accompanying Zeus/Barnabas.[3]
