The city of Moab does not have a good reputation in the Bible. Herod the Great made it a fortress. At the end of the 3rd century AD, the Christian community was thriving enough to have a bishopric.
A little to the east of Hechbôn there is a large reservoir, which probably corresponds to one of the ponds that were outside the walls.
