Joazar was the son of Simon Boethus, a High Priest who owed his pontificate to the beauty of his daughter Mariamne II, whom Herod the Great married in his third nuptials (Cited by Monsignors A. and J. Lemann).
Joazar is thus the brother-in-law of Herodias and the uncle of the princess Salome (the dancer at the feast of Herod).
Joazar himself was High Priest for six years from 4 BC to year 2 and was deposed by Quirinius.
According to Flavius Josephus, Joazar was present at the trial of Jesus with his two brothers, one of whom, like him, was a former high priest (Flavius Josephus, Jewish Antiquities, XV, IX, 3; XVII, 3,39, VI, 4; XIII, 1; XVIII, 26; XIX, VI, 2).
