The Gospel took root there very early. Indeed, Peter, passing through Lydda, healed Aeneas, the paralytic. This healing caused a large number of conversions to Jesus Christ.[2]

Legend has it that Saint George, who slew the dragon (Dagon), was born and died there in the 4th century.
