Eli of Enon

Samaritan of Enon. He is the Elder of the village and takes under his protection the young Benjamin abused by Alexander:

"You would end up by becoming wicked if you stayed here. A heart hardens when injustice is too hard. And it is too hard."

Character and Appearance

An old man, almost a centenarian, half blind, but still vigorous. In his youth he must have been as strong as an oak from these regions. He is as tall as Jesus, good but bent by age.

Apostolic Journey

Deeply believing, he rejoices that the young Benjamin can following Jesus:

"You are happy then, as, because of your age, you are free from all chains and you can follow the Truth, without anything preventing you from doing so, not even the will of a father or a mother. So what for many years seemed to be a punishment now appears to be providential. God is good."

He will encourage Benjamin to forgive Alexander who has become blind:

"«And forgive the poor wretch.»

«Why? I will forgive him, yes. But why poor wretch?»

«Because he cursed the Lord and light died out in his eyes. None of us will have to fear him any more. He is blind and ill. How dreadful the power of God!…»"
