Creation, Creatures, Genesis, Theory of Evolution
Creation does not increase God, it does not sanctify Him, it does not enrich Him. He is infinite. He would have been so even if Creation had not existed. But God-Love wanted to have love, and He created to have love. It is only from love that God can draw from Creation, and this love, which is intelligent and free only in the Angels and men, is the glory of God, the joy of the Angels, the Religion for men.[1]
In "The Gospel as it was revealed to me"
Creation, Genesis of the world
- Why Creation.[2]
- Everywhere... Everything keeps saying it. From the grass to the star, from Water to Fire, from wool to food, from light to Darkness, from health to illness, from wealth to poverty. Everything says: "I am the Lord".[3]
- Genesis lives in nature, to look means To Believe, if one knows how to see.[4]
- Jesus is present in creation and in life.[5]
- "There is not a thing that does not have a good reason to exist - Account of Genesis".[6]
- Since Genesis, God leads humanity.[7]
- There is nothing completely harmful in creation. Only Evil is clearly and solely harmful.[8]
- By an order of His Thought, God created the firmament and the earth, that is the mass of atmosphere and the mass of dust, the incorporeal and the corporeal, what is very light and what is heavy, but both poor and still empty, still formless, because enveloped in Darkness, without stars and without life.[9]
- Nothing would have existed if from all eternity I had not said "Yes" to my Father, preparing myself to obey both as God Son and as Man, at the moment my Father would have found just.[10]
- Creation does not increase God, it does not sanctify Him, it does not enrich Him. He is infinite. He would have been so even if Creation had not existed. But God-Love wanted to have love, and He created to have love. It is only from love that God can draw from Creation, and this love, which is intelligent and free only among the Angels and the men, is the glory of God, the joy of the Angels, the Religion for men.[11]
Created beings, creatures
- The animals and plants and everything that the Creator has created for the utility of man therefore represent a gift of love and a heritage given in stewardship by the Father to his sons, so that they use it in their interest and with gratitude towards the One who has given all Providence. Therefore, they must be loved and treated with appropriate care.[12]
- The living Soul of lower creatures mentioned in Genesis is not a Soul like that of man. It is life, simply life, that is to be sensitive to current things both material and affective. When an animal is dead, it is insensible because with death, for it, it is the true end.[13]

The Notebooks of 1943
- August 22 : The Earth, of which you are so proud and so fiercely jealous, is only one of those specks revolving in infinity, and not the largest. But certainly the most corrupted. Lives and lives swarm in the millions of worlds that bring joy to your gaze on serene nights, and the perfection of God will appear to you when you can see, with the intellectual vision of the spirit united with God, the wonders of these worlds. (page 249).[14]
- December 20 : One of the points that causes your Pride to fall into error — a point that degrades above all precisely your Pride by giving you an origin that you would repudiate as degrading if you were less wayward — is that of the Darwinian theory.[15]
The Notebooks of 1944
- May 30 : Even if man could not be all spirit like his Creator, he could — and God willed it so — testify to his origin by the perfection of a harmonious and very physical corps body, like a living vessel destined to contain a spirit without the stain of sin. Let this destroy the shameful theory according to which you descend from a monkey. You come from God, not from an animal which the old Mosaic law qualified as "unclean." Remember: "Those of the four-legged animals that walk on the soles of their feet, you shall consider unclean." Leviticus 11:27 (page 329)
- July 14 : The Mighty One and the Infinite certainly had no need to obtain man from a secular evolution of monkeys. The monkey was what it is from the moment it was created and made its first leaps on the trees of the earthly paradise. Man was what he is from the moment God created him from the mud and breathed into him the spirit, which he had done to no other creature.[16] (page 437).
The Notebooks from 1945 to 1950
- December 30, 1946 : I learn that skeletons of ape-men have been found in a cave. I remain pensive, [...] Jesus addresses me to say: "Look for the key in chapter 6 of Genesis. Read it." [...] I understand that men suddenly became corrupt and nothing more. I don't see what connection this chapter can have with the ape-man [...]
You are not the only one who does not understand! The scholars, the scientists, the believers as well as the atheists do not understand it. Listen to me carefully. And start by reading: "When men began to be numerous on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God — or sons of Seth — found that the daughters of men — or daughters of Cain — pleased them and they took for Wives all whom they chose...[17] When the sons of God joined themselves to the daughters of men and they bore them children...
These were the heroes of old, those famous men." These are the men whose skeleton strength amazes your scientists, who conclude that, in the earliest times, man was much bigger and stronger than he is now, and they deduce from the structure of their skull that man descends from the monkey. These are the usual errors of men faced with the mysteries of creation. (pages 306 and following).[18] - From September to November 1950 : One must not deny miracles for the sake of rationalism. Neither that of creation, nor that of the healing of a Soul or a body. Matter was drawn out of nothing and ordered to its particular end by God […] How can those who want to explain creation and life by autogenesis and polygenesis deny that the Almighty can do less than what He created originally, which was not even matter but only chaos and which moreover consisted only of limited and imperfect things?
Is it logical, purely logical and reasonable, to admit the miracle of chaos ordering itself by itself, generating the cell by itself, that the cell evolves into species, and that species into others always more perfect and more numerous, while God is described as unable to realize the entire creation by Himself?
Is it logical and reasonable to support the thesis of species evolution, and even of a given species up to the most perfect animal form since endowed with speech and reason — even that alone — when one sees that, for millennia, all other animal creatures have acquired neither reason nor speech Good that they coexist with man?
Each animal is as it was created millennia ago. There have been, certainly, structural reductions, crossings by which the first created races produced hybrid races. But one has never seen, over the years and millennia, the bull cease to be what it is, no more than the lion or the dog, which has lived with man for centuries. Nor has one seen monkeys become men, or at least human animals, despite the millennia passed and their contacts with man, whom they can certainly imitate in gestures but not speech.
These lower creatures refute, with the evidence of facts, the ramblings of enthusiasts of purely rational science. They are what they were. The variety of their species testifies to the omnipotence of God. But they have not evolved. They have remained as they were, with their instincts, their natural laws, their particular Mission, which is never useless despite how it may appear. God creates no useless and totally harmful works. (pages 601 and following).[19]
Lessons on Saint Paul's Epistle to the Romans
- Lesson No. 23 : There was no autogenesis, there was no evolution. There was simply Creation willed by the Creator. Your reason, of which you are so Proud, should be enough to convince you that from nothing one cannot form something initial, and from a single initial thing, one cannot form the whole…[20]
In fundamental Christian texts
In the Bible
- Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands. Day to day pours out speech, night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, there are no words; their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.[21]
In the Catechism of the Catholic Church
- "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth".[22] It is with these solemn words that Sacred Scripture begins.[23]
- The question of the origins of the world and man is the subject of numerous scientific researches that have magnificently enriched our knowledge of the Age and dimensions of the cosmos, the development of living forms, the appearance of man.[24]

The Church and evolutionism
- Declaration of John Paul II to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (October 22, 1996) :
(…) Considering the state of scientific research at the time and also the specific requirements of theology, the encyclical Humani Generis regarded the Doctrine of evolutionism as a serious hypothesis, worthy of investigation and deep reflection on par with the opposing hypothesis. Pius XII added two methodological conditions: that one not adopt this opinion as if it were certain and demonstrated Doctrine and as if one could completely disregard Revelation regarding the questions it raises. He also stated the condition to which this opinion was compatible with Christian faith, a point on which I will return…
