Possession (Divine, Satanic), Exorcism

Diabolical possession allows Satan to manifest in a person subtly or very powerfully, thus entirely obstructing their freedom of action. Diabolical possession is depicted, among other places, in various episodes of the Gospel, where Jesus drives out the demons. It is through exorcism, practiced by a priest, that it is possible to cast out the demon and free the Soul. The person may also initially use the exorcism prayer of Pope Leo XIII (see below).

In "The Gospel as It Was Revealed to Me"[edit | edit source]

    Divine Possession[edit | edit source]

    • The creature who, by their own will, applies only their good will to love their God completely, becomes absorbed in God and in the Light which is God, in the Wisdom which is God, sees and understands everything…[1]

In the sense of the frenzied (Satanic possession)[edit | edit source]

    • Diabolical possession and perversions.[2]
    • Possessions.[3]
    • Every illness, being a torment and a disorder, may hide Satan and Satan may hide in an illness, use it, create it to torment and make blaspheme God.[4]
    • I am afraid of the possessed, I think that if Satan has taken them thus, they must have been very evil - You think that possession only manifests through disorderly cries…[5]
    • His Face, until then masked by a hypocritical patina of gentleness and humility, becomes angular, harsh, brutal, cruel. Truly demonic. All the hatred, but a hatred that is not human[6]
    • I am not competent, but I believe I am not mistaken in saying that through the mouth of Judas, it is Satan himself who spoke, that it is a moment of evident possession by Satan in the perverted apostle, already at the threshold of the Crime, already damned by his own will. The very way the flow of words stops, leaving the apostle stunned, reminds me of other possession scenes, seen during the three years of the public life of Jesus.[7]
    • There is no possession unless at the beginning there is an adherence to some Satanic Temptation.[8]

Exorcism, casting out demons[edit | edit source]

    • The possessed of Gerasa: "My name is Legion, for we are many." And he begged him earnestly not to send the evil spirits out of the region. There was there a large herd of pigs seeking their food near the hill. The spirits addressed this petition to Jesus: "Send us into these pigs, let us enter them!" Jesus allowed it. Then the evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs. The whole herd—about two thousand pigs—rushed down the cliff into the lake and drowned there. ([9]-[10]-[11]) and [12]
    • When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, it wanders through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.[13] and [14]
    • I tried to command the Spirit speaking in her to go away in the name of Jesus called the Christ. Always the spirits of Darkness fled when I used this Name. This time, no.[15]
    • What is immaterial and perceptible only to the immaterial: reason and spirit, man does not notice it, and even if he notices it, he does not care, especially if it does not harm him. These hidden possessions therefore escape our power as exorcists! And they are the most damaging, because they work on the most chosen part, with the most chosen part, and on other chosen parts: from reason to reason, from spirit to spirit.[16]
    • "Why do you cast us out and do not want us when you keep near You a legion of demons in one? Do you not know that all hell is in one? Yes, you know it..."[17]

In other sources[edit | edit source]

On October 13, 1884, Leo XIII witnessed a dialogue between God and Satan. The devil boasts of destroying the Church given extra time and power. God grants him a period of one hundred years.

The pope then sees the century "wrapped in Darkness and the abyss," then a legion of demons scattered throughout the world until Saint Michael the archangel cast them into the abyss.

Following his vision, he composed a prayer to St Michael the Archangel prescribed at the end of every Mass:

"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."[18]

This prayer was subsequently set aside after Leo XIII, but on Sunday, April 24, 1994, Good Shepherd Sunday, John Paul II, during the Regina Caeli prayer[19], invited its regular recitation to "obtain help in the battle against the forces of Darkness and against the Spirit of this world."

"It is to this very battle that the Book of Revelation refers[20], said John Paul II […] Pope Leo XIII surely had this image in mind when, at the end of the last century, he introduced throughout the Church a special prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel […] "Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite you all not to forget it but to say it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of Darkness and against the Spirit of this world."

In doing so, he explicitly referred to chapter 6 of the letter to the Ephesians:

"Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."[21]

Pope Leo XIII actually also wrote a complete Exorcism prayer, and this prayer to St Michael the Archangel (above) is part of it.[22] The Church has always encouraged laypeople to say it.
"This prayer composed to put the demon to flight can preserve the Family and society from great evils especially if it is fervently recited, even by simple faithful.
It is especially used in cases where one can suppose a demonic influence, manifesting: either by the wickedness of men, or by temptations, illnesses, storms, calamities of all kinds."

This Exorcism can be particularly useful for people who are "polluted" or even possessed by one or more demons because they have had in the past practices of magic, divination, astrology, esotericism, table-turning or making the spirits of the dead speak, etc... (on the link is a copy of the copy of Leo XIII's exorcism published in 1922 in Paris with the imprimatur of Cardinal Dubois).
