John of Ephesus
Leader of a synagogue in Ephesus. Son of Naomi, a proselyte of Perga. Born almost at the same time as Jesus and in the same place. Saved by Mary who breastfed him instead of his mother, whose breast dried up following the sudden death of his father. He meets Jesus again on the occasion of the 3rd Passover, where he is healed by him of his blindness.[1]-[2]
Disciple, he is involved in the case of the prophetess Sabea of Bethlehem.[3] It is he who, during Holy Week, marvels at the purity of the Temple whose destruction Jesus will announce.[4]
Character and Appearance[edit | edit source]
One year younger than Jesus, robust, with a loyal face if lacking in charm.[5]
Apostolic Journey[edit | edit source]
After his rejection and healing by Jesus, he decides to follow him and is part of the apostolic group apostolic."I want to remain as a disciple, without asserting rights for the drops of milk I sucked from the breast that nourished you. The days of a moon mean nothing to create a bond, but everything in the mercy of your Mother then, and yours this morning."[6]Attached to the group of the seventy-two, he is a witness close to the Ascension:
"You, John, for a brief time brother at the very pure breast and come to the Light more than to sight".[7]
His Name[edit | edit source]
Yohanân (Iohanân) means "the Eternal has shown Grace, has been favorable". Historical reference: a fairly common first name among Old Testament figures without any standing out particularly.
