Repentance, Remorse
See also: Sin, Fault, Blasphemy, Forgiveness, to Forgive, Reconcile, Reconciliation, Confession, Absolution, Penance, fasting.
Deep change that takes place in man when he acknowledges his sin before God, expresses regret for his fault, and asks for forgiveness. Repentance involves the desire to repair one’s fault and to bring about a true rebirth. It is accompanied by the firm resolve to no longer repeat it, with the help of divine Grace.[1]The word "contrition" is also used.
In "The Gospel as it was revealed to me"
- The process of repentance and forgiveness.[2]
- "Can you To Believe that I can have pity?" – "Yes, because you are holy and I am repentant. I am Sin, but you are Mercy. Purify me, Lord, but the Soul before the flesh."[3]
- The sin and repentance of King David. "In the Heart of man, there is a point that keeps the memory of the Face of God, a particularly chosen point which is our 'Holy of Holies' from where come the holy inspirations and holy resolutions."[4]
- There is no repentance as long as the desire for the object that caused the sin lasts.[5]
- There is no fault so great that it cannot be washed away first by repentance, then by Grace, and finally by the Savior. There is no sinner so great that he cannot lift his humbled Face and smile at a hope of redemption. He only needs to completely renounce the fault, heroically resist Temptation, be sincere in the will to reborn.[6]
- Repentance is a form of love. He who repents says to God through his repentance: "I cannot remain under the threat of your wrath, because I love you and want to be loved."[7]
- There is no sin that God does not forgive if the sinner is truly repentant.[8]
- Even the grief for a mistake committed, which afflicts you because by this mistake you displeased God, must be peaceful, comforted by humility and trust. Overwhelming self-reproach is always an indication of Pride, and thus even distrust.
If someone is humble, he knows he is a poor man subject to the miseries of the flesh which sometimes triumphs. If someone is humble, he trusts not so much in himself as in God and remains calm, even in defeats, saying: "Forgive me, Father. I know You know my weakness that sometimes overcomes. I believe You have pity on me. I have firm confidence that You will help me in the Future even more than before, although I give You so little satisfaction."
And be neither indifferent nor stingy with God’s Goods. Give of what you have in wisdom and virtue. Be active in spiritual matters as men are active in matters of the flesh.[9] - The path of repentance and Grace: But when it comes to spirits, I do not force their resurrection. I give the first Call and the first help.[10]
- Repentance of the Samaritan woman.[11]
- Aglae tells the Virgin Mary about the path of redemption from her life of sin.[12]
- Between the one who loves me in his youth pure and the one who loves me in the sincere regret of a Heart reborn to Grace, I make no distinction, and to the Pure and the Repentant I entrust the charge of understanding my thought like no other.[13]
- You could not come to the Truth without the goodness of God. The Lord allows that one who, still without repentance, seeks Him, comes to find Him. For repentance generally comes when man, consciously or with some Conscience of what his Soul wants, knows God.[14]
- Every grave sin destroys Grace, that is, the health of The Spirit. The signs you will leave us will restore health, it is true, but the obstinate sinner, who refuses the Struggle Against sin, will become weaker each time even if he receives forgiveness each time.[15]
- There is no true repentance and firm will in you. It is only an attempt of a remnant of love for Me, for your former vocation. This is not bad at all; on the contrary, it is the first step toward the Good. Cultivate it, make it grow, graft it onto the supernatural! I know how to wait. I pray. It is I who take the place, in this waiting, of your disgusted angel.[16]
- Repent. Come to Mercy. She opens her arms to you. She shows you the way. I am the pure source, the source of life.[17]
- It is a superstitious and useless rite if it is not preceded by sincere Confession of the fault.[18]
- Judas asks Jesus for forgiveness but does not repent.[19]
- Do not fear your God with an Unjust fear… The true repentance of the sinner, the true will to repair, both born of a true love for the Lord, wash away the stain of the fault and make one worthy of divine forgiveness.[20]
- Let no one be discouraged if he has sinned and repented, if he has erred and recognizes his error.[21]
- Yes, I say to you. Often God, the Almighty, the All, waits for a creature, a nothing, to make or not make a sacrifice, a prayer, to sign or not sign the condemnation of a spirit. It is never late, never too late to try and hope to To Save a Soul.[22]
- Truly I say to you that the Creator, to Save a creature, can even turn what is evil into Good. And, if you want, it is into Good that your coming to Me will be changed. Do not be ashamed of your Savior, do not be ashamed to show Him your bare Heart.[23]
- Listen. I tell you what you must say to be in Peace, whatever happens to you. Say with Me: "I, with the help of God, propose to myself, as much as possible, not to yield to the weaknesses of the flesh". And be firm in this will. If then one day, even involuntarily, the weary and afflicted flesh overcomes your will, well then, as now you will say: "I recognize that I am a poor man like all my brothers, and may this serve to humble my Pride."[24]
- Mary of Magdala (Magdalene): "Oh! how truly one must be absolute, as I was, in evil, to be able also to be, and know, and want to be absolute in Good, in obedience, in hope, in faith, in love!..."[25]
- I know that you are like someone caught by a giant octopus. But if you wanted, you could still free yourself. Oh! you would suffer, certainly. Tearing yourself away from these chains that bite and poison you would be painful. But what a joy afterwards. Judas![26]
- Repentance, patience, constancy, heroism and then, oh sinners, I promise you that you will be your own liberators. Truly I tell you that there is no Baptism that is valid, nor rite that serves, if there is no repentance and will to renounce sin. In truth I tell you that there is no sinner so great that he cannot make the Virtues that sin has torn from his Heart be reborn through tears of repentance.[27]
In fundamental Christian texts
In the Bible
- If your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; and if they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.[28]
- Judas (Maccabees) was certain that a magnificent reward is reserved for those who die remaining attached to God. That is why he made this sacrifice for the dead, so that they may be forgiven and freed from their fault.[29]
